Book Notes: Fantasy Roundup
Or, some ideas for what to read when you have a book hangover from Iron Flame:
Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle
When Emory is the sole survivor of a secret ritual in the caves below Aldryn College, her healer powers, given to those born during the new moon on a rising tide, begin to shift into something strange and uncontrollable. Will her estranged friend Baz, brother to one of the students who died, help Emory figure out her new powers and what really happened that night? This debut fantasy has it all — dark academia, an upper YA that crosses over beautifully into adult, a murder mystery, secret societies, forbidden magic, a pining romance and the most gorgeous book design I’ve seen in a while. The magic system is built around the moon phases and the tides. Curious Tides is book one of a planned duology.
The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon
What happens when Talasyn and Alaric, two soldiers from opposite sides of an entrenched war meet on the battlefield and discover their opposing powers combine to create something entirely new and unexpected? They continue to absolutely hate each other while having to work together to save their people from an even worse fate. Of course. And we all know what happens when two attractive people hate each other. Drawing inspiration from Southeast Asia, debut Filipino author Thea Guanzon has penned a fun, fresh fantasy that balances an authentic depiction of the toll of conflict on a population with a strong cast of characters and all the political machinations of Machiavelli. The Hurricane Wars is book one of a planned trilogy.
Godkiller by Hannah Kane
In a world where gods, fed by the attention, prayers, and offerings of humans, can also be destroyed by them, three disparate people come together to travel to the ruined city that was the last stand in the wars between gods and people. Kissen, a godkiller for hire. Elo, a former knight turned baker. And Inara, a young girl whose life has become intertwined with a god of white lies, Skedi. The four travel together to Blenraden, hopeful that they will find a way to untangle Skedi from Inara. All the feels of quest fantasy with characters that are delightfully flawed and human. The world building was immersive and queer normative with a host of diverse characters. The religious and magic system was at once familiar but with enough twists to make it unexpected. Godkiller is book one of a planned trilogy.
The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab
From page one of The Fragile Threads of Power, I was invested all over again in the world of the four Londons, seven years after the events from The Shades of Magic trilogy (also excellent, if you want to start there). The plot works together like interchanging gears, or a chess game, the movement of each character affecting the others, often unknowingly. There are characters from the original trilogy, new additions, and Tes, the one who, unconsciously, holds the key to everything. Schwab investigates power in this novel -- who has it and who controls it, and by whose standards its morality is judged. Schwab puts a lot of things in motion in this book, and only a few are resolved by the end. The Fragile Threads of Power is book one of planned trilogy. You can always go back and read The Shades of Magic series in the meantime!
What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez
I can’t think of a more fun combination than 1880’s Egyptian archeological digs, a feisty heroine determined to find out what happened to her explorer parents, and a current of magic running through it all. When Inez Olivera hears that her parents, on a dig in Egypt, are presumed dead, she takes matters into her own hands. Inez books passage from Bolivia to Egypt, intent on discovering the truth. What she finds in Egypt is an infuriatingly handsome young man, assisting her guardian in carrying on her parents discoveries, and men thwarting her inquiries at every turn. Add to this a mysterious ring that connects Inez to the magic of the past and the questions continue to pile up. It will take a trip up the Nile and many near escapes just to get Inez closer to any answers. Packed with action, a slow burn romance, and a huge twist kept me enthralled to the very last page. What the River Knows is book one of a planned YA duology.
Hopefully you find one, or many, of these titles to be a satisfying read!

(TW: Violence, death, transphobia, religious trauma.)
Evan was born as a female and his original full name was Rochelle Lori Myers.
As a child, Evan had a lot of insecurities around his appearance and other kids bullied him for it.
His parents were strictly Christian and they were against the LGBTQ community or anyone with different religious beliefs.
During his childhood, Evan was always a rebellious kind of child as he had bouts of reckless behavior which made him end up in the principal's office many times.
When he was 13, Evan came out as a trans male but his parents didn't approve of it and kicked him out of the house while calling him a son of the devil.
After he was kicked out, he went to stay with his sister and her boyfriend who were more accepting to him.
He has always found comfort in listening to music, especially punk rock and heavy metal.
Due to his parents trying to raise Evan to be tougher, Evan has a habit of bottling up his feelings, because he worries that he's too sensitive and prone to overreacting.
He's constantly worried that even expressing negative emotions will make people annoyed or frustrated by him.
Evan started drinking in his early teens as a form of self-medication and only got sober when he was 18 years old when he met Jeff Koval and Vincent.
He still mourns over the death of Steph and his daughter and he visits their grave every year.
He has a habit of becoming very protective of younger people he's close to or who he perceives as needing his support.
He used to live on the same street Alex Kralie used to live during his childhood.
He loves video games with his favorite being BioShock.
He is still very close to his sister and his brother-in-law since she was the one who took him in after his parents kicked him out and he worries about her safety often.
When HABIT takes over him, he often does things he has no control over such as murder and torturing people.
He doesn't remember what he does when HABIT possesses him.
He is afraid of clowns, no one knows why.
He has a strange fascination with large knives.
He has ADHD but he never was officially diagnosed until he was 19.
He has a collection of old DVDs from the 90s and early 2000s.
He is a fan of punk rock and heavy metal.
He is friends with Sarah, Jessica, Amy, Jeff Koval, and Seth.
He's not the best when it comes to using technology and he often asks Sarah or Jessica to help him use the computer.
He is also a fan of old-school horror movies.
He has bad insomnia due to his constant nightmares and has to use melatonin to get himself to sleep.
He loves dogs and has 2 of them at home.
He is currently married to a woman named Claire Robinson whom he loves more than anything.
He can't stand the taste of coffee, and if you ever offer him any he will tell you that he much prefers hot chocolate.
Evan has a secret YouTube channel where he uploads gameplay recordings of himself playing video games, with very few subscribers (including his best friend Jessica).
Evan and Seth are almost like brothers and Evan is very protective of him and Sarah.
He's heard of Zalgo many times while being possessed by HABIT but he's never met the demon king in person yet.
He has a sweet tooth.
He's got a dry sense of humor and loves sarcastic banter with those close to him.
He's bisexual.
He has an adopted daughter named Veronica who he is very overprotective of and tries his best to be a good dad to her.
He has a soft spot for animals, and tends to befriend neighborhood strays.
He's a fan of TMNT.
His favorite tv shows are Hazbin Hotel, Pokemon, and Death Note.

"Little Heaven" - Encore Performance
So you all may have noticed my absence from the Internet since late last year. I think since we're coming up close to the show dates, I'd like to share more about the (now award-winning) local stage musical my brother and I are a part of called "LITTLE HEAVEN." Not only are we in it, but also the director asked me if I would be willing to record a number of the songs she wrote for the musical to put up online to drum up hype for our Encore Performance at the end of this coming August.
"LITTLE HEAVEN is set amidst the backdrop of post-World War II Poland and weaves together the stories of those most affected by the horrors of the past as they grapple to rebuild their lives."
01) - Dance Of Life
This song's one of my favourites that I helped record for Piper and Lori Distel. "Dance Of Life" is originally sung by "The Peddler," LITTLE HEAVEN's nameless narrator. He lives around Maél Niebo, an apartment complex that refugees, the lower class, and the disparaged call their home. He is their witness and takes an interest in the ever-changing events in their small Polish town.
"Told through song, scene and monologue, the stories of Maél Niebo's residents are intertwined, exploring themes of grief, hereditary bias and the power of community.
02) - Part Of The Plan
The song "Part Of The Plan" was originally sung by the co-writer and director herself, Lori Distel in the role of Tovah Hoffson, mother of Rachel and wife of Solomon Hoffson. After the horrific tragedy that displaced many of Maél Niebo's residents, Tovah tries to remind the community that there must be a blessing hidden in their tragedy. Sadly, her message is not welcomed by everyone.
Big thanks to my brother JERO (aka John Michael Kelly) for providing the voice for Tovah's opposition in the recording.
03) Justice For All
Justice For All paints the conflicting worldviews of the German father Leo Meier, and the Romani Maestro Marik Covali, who had been hired to teach music to the Meier daughters. JERO in this recording plays the voice of Leo while I provide the voice of the Maestro.
"Leo Meier, a newspaper reporter from Berlin, wrestles with the guilt he harbours for the small part he played in perpetuating the Reich's hateful message. Romani violin virtuoso, Maestro Covali, attempts to start anew following the tragic deaths of his wife and young daughters."
04) - Land Of Broken Dreams
"The Hoffson Family; father, mother, daughter. There were sons, too, in the days before. Twins. Then, there were thousands of sons. Thousands of daughters. Not anymore..."
And at last we come to one of the songs that I actually sing in the live production of the play, "Land Of Broken Dreams." Together, JERO and I play as David and Daniel Hoffson, the only of Solomon's children to die in the Holocaust. Twins were subjected to inhumane science experiments in the camps. In this song, Solomon wrestles with the guilt he feels over doing what he had to to save his children from a fate worse than death.
The play also touches on topics of queerness, love separated by religion and tradition, and hope - even when the world is at its darkest.
Other songs recorded by and mixed by Alexander W. Halma-Reed are also up wherever you listen to music. Click here to hear some more!
LITTLE HEAVEN Music and Lyrics by Lori Robinson Distel and Book by Piper J. Distel. Orchestrations by Alexander W. Halma-Reed. The show goes live August 29-September 2, 2024 at The Guelph Little Theatre in Guelph, Ontario Canada.

Book Chats: The Spellshop
Summer is here. The days are warm and long, and the evenings are perfect for sitting outside and reading (or listening and crocheting, in my case) as the sun goes down. The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst is an amazing choice for this kind of relaxing evening. The narrator was excellent, the descriptions were lush, and the setting was idyllic. A librarian and her sentient spider plant seek refuge from a bloody revolution—with crates of books in tow—by heading to Caltrey, a small island on the outskirts of a nation made of islands. All Kiela wants is to protect her books and live unnoticed in the cottage her parents left her. (Un)fortunately for her, that's not how small villages work. With an attractive next door neighbor and a friendly baker determined to welcome her into their small community, as well as a suspicious old man who is set on driving her out, Kiela has to decide if letting people in is a chance she's willing to take. Warning: you will want baked goods slathered with jam by the end of this book.
Becca: Kiela was such a fun, unique character. Her love of books obviously resonates with me as an avid reader and a bookseller, and her habit of overthinking what she says and does was also very relatable. What did you think about her as the main character and voice of the story? Lori: I loved Kiela. For the same reasons as you but also, I loved the way circumstances kept pushing her beyond her comfort zone and then, because of getting to hear her overthinking inner voice, the reader knows what choosing to be brave costs her. But she does it anyway. It's not comfortable to acknowledge that those moments are what bring growth. Also, she has blue skin. And blue hair. And lots of blue clothes. I approved of all the blue. What did you think about Kiela's scheme to barter homemade jam for the supplies she needs? Becca: Making jam is not necessarily the occupation I would turn to for survival, but I also don't live on a little island surrounded by merhorses and abundant fruit trees and bushes. Well, maybe the bushes; our blackberry brambles are out of control. I loved how she took what she had available to her and, with much determination, figured out a way to keep moving forward. Lori: She did. No matter the obstacles, she kept trying. I think we need to discuss Caz, though, the sentient spider plant! Becca: So...a talking plant research assistant. I wouldn't mind that. Maybe then I'd finally know how to care for one without it slowly fading away on me. And Caz has such an excellent personality. Lori: He stole the show in my opinion. I thought he had all the best lines. His friendship and support of Kiela really brought home to me how careful Sarah Beth Durst was to give all her characters, and the environment they inhabit, a nuanced worth. She also created an interesting magic system. Becca: I do love it when magic is something accessible to everyone in a book, instead of just the chosen few who are born with it. But with all of the impressive feats that can be accomplished with spells, I think it was the little magics scattered throughout the book were my favorite. Yes, Kiela wanted to do big magics to help her community, but the little ones that encouraged plant growth and water to flow were the ones that resonated with me. And it's the small magics that she was determined to share with those around her as a way to make their lives better. Lori: It really shows how little things, that maybe don't seem like they matter that much, actually have more of an impact than one might think. It's encouraging that making small choices towards the good does make a difference in the world. Becca: It is. And I appreciated how Kiela came to believe that sentiment because she observed Larran, her always-willing-to-help neighbor, put forth the effort to do so. Lori: I loved watching the spark between Kiela and Larran grow. She started out so wary and standoffish, but as she continued to see how good he was (and how good he looked shirtless), she started to admire him, until she found herself unable to resist.
This sweet book is perfect for summer, with its cottagecore vibes and berry-filled island. The first printing has beautiful sprayed purple edges to add to the appeal. So, stop by to pick up a pretty book, whip up (or purchase) some scones with jam (preferably raspberry), and settle in for a gentle adventure full of plants, jam, and slightly illegal magic.
— Becca & Lori

Xover Possibility: Scooby-Universal-Doo
This is a limited crossover series I'm now considering.
Scooby and the gang have teamed up with several celebrities and a few famous characters in taking down ghosts and solving mysteries under WB's commission, but let's see what happens if they end up in the Universal Pictures cyber universe and end up doing…well, pretty much the same formula, except with versions of the Universal animated characters.
Here are some possibilities I thought up.
Franchise: Despicable Me Characters teamed up with: Felonious Gru, Lucy Wilde, and three of the Minions Type of monster/ghost: Chronology: before Despicable Me 3 or Despicable Me 4 Guest Voices: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Steve Coogan, and Pierre Coffin Chase scene song: "Chuck Berry" by Pharrell Williams (from Despicable Me 3)
Franchise: the Lorax Characters teamed up with: Ted Wiggins, Audrey, and the Lorax (whom Mystery Inc believes is a mascot) Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Michael Cera, Ashleigh Ball, Danny DeVito and Chris Renaud Chase scene song: n/a
Franchise: the Secret Life of Pets Characters teamed up with: Katie, Max, Duke, Gidget, and Snowball Type of monster/ghost: Note: The pets will be able to communicate thanks to a translation device Gru briefly lets the gang borrow Guest Voices: Patton Oswalt, Eric Stonestreet, a Kevin Hart soundalike, Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, and Lori Alan Chase scene song:
Franchise: the Road to El Dorado Characters teamed up with: Modern-day lookalike descendants of Miguel, Tulio and Chel with the same names Type of monster/ghost: Stone Jaguar Guest Voices: Kevin Kline, a Kenneth Branagh soundalike, and Rosie Perez Chase scene song: n/a
Franchise: Shrek/Puss in Boots Characters teamed up with: Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: ??? Chase scene song: ?
Franchise: Wallace & Gromit Characters teamed up with: Wallace & Gromit Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: ??? Chase scene song: a UK rock band song
Franchise: Kung Fu Panda Characters teamed up with: "furry cosplayers" Po and the Furious Five (minus Mantis) Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Jack Black, Kari Wahlgren, David Cross, Lucy Liu, and a Jackie Chan soundalike Chase scene song: Dumpling Warrior Remix (instrumental) from Kung Fu Panda 2
Franchise: Megamind Characters teamed up with: Megamind, Minion, and Roxanne Ritchi Type of monster/ghost: Note: Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate and its TV series would be ignored Guest Voices: Keith Ferguson, David Cross, and Tina Fey Chase scene song: "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osborne
Franchise: Mr. Peabody & Sherman Characters teamed up with: Who else? Mr. Peabody and Sherman Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Chris Parnell and a male child actor Chase scene song: "Way Back When" by Grizzfolk
Franchise: Rocky & Bullwinkle Characters teamed up with: Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Kath Soucie, Tom Kenny, and any voice from the 2018 cartoon Chase scene song: ?

I'm not absolutely certain I'll do this, as I'm already committed to other things. In fact, I might give this series idea to someone more qualified to write crossover mysteries. But still, if anyone would like to suggest types of monsters or ghosts Mystery Inc and their new co-detectives would be facing, I could try to think of the episode plots for them. Also, don't suggest the villains' identities unless through private note, otherwise it would kill the mystery.

more about serving
Yesterday I talked about the art of servanthood and said this … do something for someone who generally does that for you. I mean turn the tables, change the method, think of that person that has done so much in serving you and go serve them.
It is a new way of thinking or living. It is servanthood at its height and best. It was seen in the greatest giving to the least. That is not the “Robin Hood” mentality of taking from the rich to give to the poor. It is simply recognizing those who do for you and doing for them.
Colossians 3:24 NLT
Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.
Here are some quotes about being a servant:
"What you do has far greater impact than what you say.” - Steven Covey
"Memories of our lives, of our works and our deeds will continue in others.” - Rosa Parks
"A life isn't significant except for its impact on others lives.” - Jackie Robinson
Faithful servants never retire. You can retire from your career, but you will never retire from serving God. - Rick Warren
That is just a few. May we be found serving and sharing more often than we serve served!
Proverbs 3:27 NLT
Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.
Pray for:
Pray for Jalen Brown and Devika Kancherla as both continue to be in the hospital. Pray for Deb Patterson and her as her mother passed away. Pray for my mission trip to Cuba happening in two weeks.
On Going Prayer List:
Deb Mosely, Jenny Biggs, Sarah Ogle and her pregnancy, Joan Norman, Carolyn Holland, Debbie Coleman, Anita Martin, Martha Pennington, David Smith, Raye Anne Thore, Lloyd and Senga, and Danny and Kathy Wilson. Those battling cancer: Ricky Burnett, Felecia Watkins, WT Setliff, Leah Riddle’s sister Lori, Ron Harris, and Jon Morris.

Okay, wow. So I just found out the news that Persona 3 Reload (in addition to not having FeMC or the Answer) will replace all the entire English Voice Cast with new actors. …Yeah.
Protagonist will be played by Aleks Le (replacing Yuri Lowenthal)
Junpei lori will be played by Zeno Robinson (replacing Vic Mignogna)
Yukari Takeba will be played by Heather Gonzalez (replacing Michelle Ruff)
Aigis will be played by Dawn Bennett (replacing Karen Straussman)
Akihiko Sanada will be played by Alejandro Saab (replacing Liam O’Brien)
Fuuka Yamagishi will be played by Suzie Yeung (replacing Paula Tiso in Persona 3, Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable and Wendee Lee in the spin-off games Persona 4 Arena, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Persona Q and Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight)
Ken Amada will be played by Justine Lee (replacing Ken’s uncredited voice actor in Persona 3, Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable and Cindy Robinson in the spin-off games Persona 4 Arena, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Persona Q and Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight)
Mitsuru Kirijo will be played by Allegra Clark (replacing Tara Platt)
Shinjiro Aragaki will be played by Justice Slocum (replacing George Grant)
Don’t get me wrong, I love the new actors from their other works (Suzie Yeung as Yuffie in Final Fantasy VII Intergrade; Alejandro Saab as Yuri in Fire Emblem Three Houses and Three Hopes; Dawn Bennett as Female Shez in Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes; Allegra Clark as Dorothea and Shamir in Three Houses and Three Hopes, "Boss" in AI: The Somnium Files and Iori and Chihiro in 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim; and especially Zeno Robinson as Hunter in the Owl House, Goh in Pokemon Journeys, Fogado in Fire Emblem Engage and Hawks in My Hero Academia) and am so glad they’re getting more work in what are some major roles.
It’s just that the voice cast of the Persona games are so intrinsically linked to each game due how they give the performances so much focus, which will make it be hard to get used to; especially because a lot of the performances from the original Persona 3 are so iconic to their actors as some of their best work, namely (for me personally) Liam O’Brien as Akihiko, George Grant as Shinjiro, Michelle Ruff as Yukari, Tara Platt as Mitsuru and Karen Straussman as Aigis.
Again, this is good news; I just feel sad about saying goodbye to the original Persona 3 cast after having them for so many years since 2007 and getting so attached their work. But, after so long, looks like Akihiko’s “I’ve been waiting for this” will finally be gone.
